Leading The Way
TUAN NASARUDDIN BIN ABDUL MUTTALIB
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
LANGKAWI DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (LADA)
Welcome to the official Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark website. We at LADA have created this site to help generate interest in and knowledge of the Geopark to the general public, as well as provide a more comprehensive research tool for specialists and educators alike. We hope the site will also serve as a stimulus for travellers everywhere to visit Langkawi—one of the world’s most spectacular and unique ‘eco-treasures’.
Langkawi has long been one of Southeast Asia’s—and the world’s—premier tropical island destinations. Its stature was further enhanced in 2007 when the archipelago was awarded UNESCO Global Geopark status—the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
With some of the oldest rock formations in Southeast Asia dating back over half a billion years, along with a variety of exotic flora and fauna, spectacular landscapes and seascapes, as well as its rich ethnic, cultural, and archeological treasures, Langkawi UNESCO Geeopark is truly an exceptional eco-tourism experience.
The Geopark’s ongoing success is the collective result of many people and organisations, especially all those involved directly or indirectly in the island’s tourism industry. The list includes airport and airline staff, hotels, F&B outlets, ground transportation personnel, tour operators, NGOs, and a long list of government agencies.
Part of LADA’s mission, especially in today’s digital and social media-driven age, is to share and disseminate information about the Geopark, especially in letting people know what a truly priceless ecological wonder Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark is.
But even more important is our need to educate people about the importance—and fragility—of this ecosystem, and how it is a vital part of an even greater whole: our Planet.
Therefore, Langkawi’s continued health and vitality are crucial not only to its people, but to the entire world as well. They are not only part of our heritage, but also that which we inherit so as to pass on to the next generation. In that sense, ours is much more than just an administrative goal. It is a responsibility and an obligation as a steward of this natural endowment.
To that end, LADA will continue to fulfill its primary duty: to protect the rich geological and biological habitats and diversity of Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, and ensure its preseration.
And finally, let me take this opportunity to extend a warm personal invitation to visit Langkawi, especially as we prepare to welcome the world during Visit Malaysia Year 2020.
We hope to see you soon!
